Setting background-color of a row

I'm using the gridComplete method to iterate over the grid and set the background colour of each row, depending on the value of a field. This is working, as we can see from the HTML:
<tr id="row1" class="ui-widget-content jqgrow ui-row-ltr" tabindex="-1" role="row" style="background-color: rgb(102, 255, 102);">
Alas, I have no background colour. Where is this been overwritten / supressed?
