Method to sort by colum

I need a way of sorting by a hidden field. I've got a table that, by default, is ordered by timestamp, which is hidden. If a user then changes this by clicking on a colum header, then I'd like to add a button to revert back. Issue is, I can't find the method to do so. $().sortData looks promising, but I'm not sure if it's correct.
