Hello,
One possible solution is to construct the grid after the database request.
With other words you can have ajax wich obtain colNames and colModel
from database and pass it to jqGrid.
Also the next major release will have a method to construct grid dynamically from xml or json data. See roadmap.

just to mention, if anyone else has the same problem:
I am using coldfusion and you can create a colNames model with
lColName = ArrayToList(ColnameGroup,",")
If in the ColnameGroup Colname1 Colname2 Colname3 are inserted, in the lColName Colname1,Colname2,Colname3 are returned and this can be used by colName:[#lColNames#].
Don`t know whether there is sth like that in Javascript, but for me it works.
