It would be really nice to show another form without header, pager etc to indicate an empty grid. This could be added as a new property of jpGris for example

$('#grid').jqGrid({

emptyTemplate: DOM or jquery object to be shown in place of the grid

});

I added in my application by checking getGridParam("records") in gridComplete and adding some html code instead of the grid.
