Can the different callback extensions that you provide in the populate method like : beforeRequest, loadBeforeSend decide if processing should continue by returning true or false. For instance if beforeRequest returned false then the populate method should not make its ajax call and simply show an empty grid.

I think no, but you can use the datatype as function and have a decision to continue or not.
