jQuery Grid Plugin - jqGrid

I have similar issues in my app and I have two solutions:

1. open the edit window in a new browser window so that when it is closed you see the original window with the grid, just as you left it. There are at least two problems with this: the grid is not refreshed so if it contains fields which are changed in the edit window, the operator has to refresh to see the changes, and it leads to multiple open windows if the operator does not close the edit window but simply minimizes it.

2. store the operator's choices for the grid in a cookie or server-side session table (I use the latter). Everytime a request is made, store the important parts of the request so that when the operator returns to that grid, you start with the last configuration not your default. I store, among other things, the rows to display, the page last displayed and the sort order settings all identified by grid name; then whenever an operator returns to a grid previously visited, it appears just as it was left.
