Change searchoptions after grid load

Is there a way to change the search option that were created when the grid was created, such as : searchoptions:{sopt:['eq','ne']

to searchoptions:{sopt:['eq','ne', 'lt', 'le']

This - alert("SEARCH OPTIONS FOR 4: " + colModel[4].searchoptions); return an Object, but I can't figure out how to access that object and then change it. I tried to treat it as an array and that failed.
