Hello Tony,
the current code of jqGrid use in different way the error handle of $.ajax. The form editing module uses data.statusText (see here or here as examples) and inline editing use res.responseText (see here and here).
In case of cross-domain errors for example the responseText property will be not set and "undefined" text will be displayed. Probebly one can better change res.responseText to something like res.responseText || res.statusText?
