I tried upgrading jqGrid from 3.4.3 to 3.7.1 but when I editied a record in "FormEdit" mode empty textboxes were filled with " ".  I saw the posting on how this is a workaround for the cell borders not appearing in IE7, but it does not work correctly in the form edit mode.  This was tested with IE 7 and Firefox 3.6.3 with the same result.
