If a jqgrid request times out, it seems that jqgrid tries to read nsIXMLHttpRequest.status before that field is available. I believe that XMLHttpRequest.readyState should be checked first. We are setting a global ajax timeout in jquery using $.ajaxSetup('timeout', someMilliseconds);
uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE) [nsIXMLHttpRequest.status]" nsresult: "0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE)" location: "JS frame :: someURL:: anonymous :: line 0" data: no]

Hello,
One idea you can try is to hook the client-side loadError event and create your own error handling that will override the default one, e.g.
..
loadError: loadErrorHandler
..
loadErrorHandler(xht, st, handler) {
if (document.readyState ...
}
