Hello Tony,
I posted recently the pull request after answering the answer on the stackoverflow.
The first problem which I try to fix is that jqGrid hide currently only the data in case of usage groupCollapse: true option. So one sees the picture like

The next problem is the following. If the user expend for example "test1" (the top-level group) jqGrid expend all sub-groups of "test1" instead of displaying the next grouping headres only.
The changes which I suggest makes the behavior of expanding/collapsing in case of multilevel grouping more native in my opinion. All works very close to subgrids of treegrids.
