Do you probably mean the usage of $() instead of $(document)? In the case I could suppose that you use the original version of the jqModal.js and not the version included in the jqGrid. I recommens you to download the oridinal r13 version of the jqModal.js and compare it with the version of the file included in the jqGrid. You will see that many lines are changed and additionaly included the new option closeoverlay which is active used in jqGrid.
So you should just use the jqModal.js included in the jqGrid.
Best regards
Oleg
